Matt Jarman has specialised in film soundtrack restoration since 2019, working on classic feature films prepared for commercial Blu-ray and digital release.
Every soundtrack is reviewed scene by scene, second by second and, where required, frame by frame. Treatments are selected according to the individual problem rather than applied automatically across an entire film.
The objective is not to make an old soundtrack sound artificially modern. It is to reduce distracting defects while protecting dialogue, music, effects, atmosphere and the historical character of the original production.

Separating the Pins from the Needles
In this excerpt from a classic Shaw Brothers film, unwanted clicks and pops occur amongst footsteps and other click-like Foley effects. A blanket click-removal process would inevitably damage both the unwanted noise and the genuine sounds of the film.
Each instance must therefore be carefully assessed and treated individually, removing only the unwanted artefacts while preserving the original soundtrack.
I call this process "separating the pins from the needles" — distinguishing unwanted defects from authentic film sound.
